Over 100 jobs created in Huddersfield as FMG Support wins National Highways Agency contract
Issued Oct 8 2008 Yorkshire firm awarded Government agency's first outsourced national vehicle recovery deal
Leading fleet performance improvement company, FMG Support, has been awarded the Highways Agency's newly created National Vehicle Recovery Manager (NVRM) contract. Working with the Highways Agency Traffic Officer Service, FMG Support will take on responsibility for recovering vehicles following abandonments, breakdowns and incidents that take place over 5,000 miles of strategic road network of motorways and major A-roads across England.
The three-year contract (with the option of extending for a further two years) will see the Huddersfield-based firm create over 100 jobs in the region, as FMG Support expects to handle up to 55,000 incidents per year. FMG Support will be recruiting a new team dedicated to managing the Highways Agency calls, which will be routed to FMG House from the Highways Agency's seven regional control centres. The partnership officially commences on the 1st October, and the new service will be rolled out nationwide from the New Year onwards.
The deal follows a four-stage tender process that has been ongoing for the last 12 months, and FMG Support was successful due to its vehicle recovery expertise and in particular, its experience in the recovery of large goods vehicles. FMG Support's solution provides a one-stop contact for the Highways Agency, allowing the Government agency to work towards implementing a national standard of practice for the first time in its history.
Nick Brown, chief executive, FMG Support said: "The Highways Agency contract is a significant success for FMG Support, and one that we are immensely proud of. Alongside our expertise and knowledge of vehicle recovery, our culture and status as a business that is large enough to deliver but agile enough to provide a bespoke solution for our customers has continued to prove successful. As well as providing another opportunity to build awareness of Huddersfield as a centre for business at a national level, we are able to create over 100 jobs in the area, which we are delighted about."
Derek Turner, the Highways Agency’s Director of Network Operations, commented: "The appointment of FMG Support is a key milestone for the transfer of the recovery function from our police partners. We are looking forward to working alongside FMG Support over the next three to five years to help us deliver safer roads for our customers through the National Vehicle Recovery Manager contract."
Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman, who has backed FMG Support throughout the tender process, added: "For a local firm to be appointed with such a high level of responsibility for the national transport network is a real testament to FMG Support’s strength in its field. As a major employer in the Huddersfield area, this deal represents significant job creation at a time of economic uncertainty, which is great news for the region."
